Board of Management report 03/17

The first meeting of the new school year took place in the school on Monday, October 2nd. All members of the board attended except Fr. John Walsh and Helen Lenehan.

The board officially welcomed Karen Boyle to the staff.

Unfortunately, Margaret Duffy has been informed that our appeal regarding the denial of DEIS status has not been successful. On a positive note though, this year the school has 119 students enrolled.

Head lice remain a problem in the school and parents are asked to be diligent in checking their children for these.

The new term has begun with several sports options for the children, including swimming, gaelic football and yoga. The board congratulated the six students who qualified from the East Mayo region for the county cross country final and wished the best of luck to David Delaney (4th) who has progressed to the Connacht final.

The board thanked the Parents’ Association for their generous donation of €2,500 towards new tech for the school. The board congratulated the PA on the successful publication of its cook book, Devilish Dishes.

Administration of medicines: An interim administration of medicines policy was adopted at the meeting. A subcommittee of Peter Cassidy and Laura Greally will compare this policy with a recently published document from the Dept. of Education and report back any discrepancies to the next meeting.

The board will hold a review of the traffic situation outside the school to both assess the impact of the plan introduced last year for the morning drop off and to consider what improvements could be made for the 3pm collection.

The next meeting of the board will take place on November 13th.

A big thank you to the Parents’ Association!

It is greatly appreciated the work the Parents’ Association did earlier in the year organising a clothes collection. We were able to buy 20 Gaelic footballs with the funds that were raised.  The footballs are suitable for all age groups – First Touch (u-8), Quick Touch (u-10), Smart Touch (U-12).

Lighthouse Display

For the past number of weeks 5th & 6th classes have been working on the topic of electricity, and as part of this topic they designed and made their own lighthouses.  To create their lighthouses they each created an electrical circuit which incorporated a working switch.  This circuit was incorporated into their own lighthouse design. Today, the children of 5th & 6th classes provided the rest of the school with a very interesting and informative display of these  lighthouses.  Well done to the senior classes on all of your hard work!
